UNFPA Tajikistan in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Tajikistan (Ministry), the WHO, the USAID, and the GIZ organised international conference to mark the International Day of the Midwife (IDM) on 6 May in Dushanbe. The IDM – a day dedicated to honouring the invaluable contributions of midwives worldwide, resonated deeply within the heart of Tajikistan's healthcare landscape. It was not merely an event but a testament to the enduring spirit of dedication and service.

The event served as a platform for acknowledging the tireless efforts of midwives across Tajikistan. Their dedication often goes unnoticed amidst the daily challenges they face, yet their impact reverberates profoundly within the communities they serve. Through heartfelt testimonials and tributes, the celebration sought to shine a spotlight on these unsung heroes, reaffirming their significance in the fabric of Tajikistan's healthcare system.

The collaborative effort behind the IDM celebration exemplifies the power of partnerships in driving positive change. The Ministry of Health and Social Protection's commitment to advancing maternal and newborn health, coupled with the support of esteemed organizations such as UNFPA, WHO, USAID, and GIZ, underscores a shared vision of a healthier, more equitable future for Tajikistan.

The celebration of the IDM in Tajikistan was a multifaceted affair, reflecting the diverse aspects of midwifery and maternal healthcare. Improving the capacity of midwives delved into the latest advancements in maternal health practices, emphasizing evidence-based approaches to ensure the well-being of both mothers and infants. These improvements were not just about disseminating knowledge but fostering a sense of camaraderie among midwives, empowering them with the tools and techniques necessary to navigate the complexities of their profession.

UNFPA in partnership with the Ministry and the National Midwifery Association celebrate the International Day of the Midwife annually. The midwives, the unsung heroes of healthcare systems globally, play a pivotal role in ensuring safe pregnancies and childbirths, as well as promoting maternal and newborn health. Their presence is not just about delivering babies; it embodies compassion, skill, and often serves as a beacon of hope in the communities they serve. In Tajikistan, where access to healthcare services can be challenging due to rugged terrains and limited resources, midwives stand as pillars of strength, bridging the gap between expectant mothers and essential healthcare.

Looking ahead, the celebration of the International Day of the Midwife serves as a catalyst for continued progress in maternal and newborn healthcare. By investing in the education, training, and empowerment of midwives, Tajikistan can pave the way towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3 – ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages.

As the echoes of celebration fade away, what remains is a profound sense of gratitude towards midwives – the silent guardians of maternal and newborn health. In Tajikistan, their dedication and compassion illuminate the path towards a brighter, healthier future for generations to come.
