UNFPA Tajikistan in collaboration with the National Reproductive Health Centre (RH Centre) of Tajikistan’s Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Population (Ministry) kicked off an awareness-raising campaign dedicated to Cervical Cancer Prevention (CCP) Week on 25 January in Dushanbe.

More than 25 obstetrician-gynecologists, midwives and colposcopists from Dushanbe and its suburbs participated in the event. The participants enhanced their understanding of cervical cancer encompassing its historical context, optimal methodologies for early detection, accurate diagnosis, efficient cervical screening, preventive measures and comprehensive treatment protocols. Additionally, attendees were briefed on the importance of providing palliative care for cervical cancer patients, which is a holistic approach in addressing the challenges posed by this disease.

“Since 2014, UNFPA has been supporting the RH Centre to enhance its capacity in cervical cancer screening through the provision of technical assistance and training programmes for obstetrician-gynecologists and midwives,” said Mr Anvar Aminov, Office-in-Charge of UNFPA Country Office in Tajikistan. “The cooperation between UNFPA and the Ministry represents a significant step in reducing the cases of cervical cancer in Tajikistan, aligning with the broader mission of UNFPA to eliminate preventable maternal deaths – one of its three transformative goals. This collaborative initiative underscores the commitment to improving maternal health outcomes and shared vision of a healthier future for women and girls in Tajikistan,” added Mr Aminov.

The Cervical Cancer Prevention Week will last until the end of January in all RH centres throughout Tajikistan where women and girls will get free consultations and cervical cancer screening.
