The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the World Health Organization's (WHO) country offices in Tajikistan organized a joint event to mark the International Women’s Day – Mother’s Day. The event took place in the Tajik State Medical College on 6 March 2024 in Dushanbe, and it brought together over 300 students and teachers from the medical college.

The event wasn't just about speeches and presentations; it was a lively engagement that saw students interacting with experts from UNFPA and WHO. The agenda was diverse, ranging from discussions on gender-based violence (GBV) to promoting healthy lifestyles. An interactive quiz on GBV not only tested the students' knowledge but also served as a catalyst for meaningful conversations.

One of the most poignant moments of the day came when specialist working in the field of GBV shared her experience with the audience. Her words resonated deeply, urging the future healthcare professionals present to not only provide medical assistance but also offer crucial psychosocial support to those facing similar challenges. This personal account served as a reminder of the profound impact that empathy and understanding can have on patients' lives.

Amidst the serious discussions, there were moments of celebration and reflection. Poems celebrating the strength and resilience of women echoed through the halls, reminding everyone of the invaluable contributions made by women in society.

The students also discussed the persistent gender inequalities occurring all over the world, including in Tajikistan. Women continue to be impacted by gender inequalities globally since they are disadvantaged by discrimination and harmful practices rooted in socio-cultural factors. This affects women across all spheres of life, including health. For example, when women and girls live in poverty, they are often malnourished and disproportionally affected by the harmful effects of unsafe cooking fuels. Furthermore, women are at higher risk of gender-based and domestic violence during emergency situations and in humanitarian settings.

International Women’s Day is celebrated on the 8th of March to champion the women’s rights and promote global peace. This year’s theme for commemoration is ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress. In a world facing multiple crises that are putting immense pressure on communities, achieving gender equality is more vital than ever. Ensuring women’s and girls’ rights across all aspects of life is the only way to secure just and sustainable economies, alongside a healthy planet for future generations. UNFPA and WHO stand united and are committed to drive change for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in their full diversity.
